As climate change causes a rise in temperature, more and more people around the world are using air conditioners. In fact, it’s predicted that by 2050 AC sales will be triple than that of today, with an estimated 5.6 billion buildings having an air conditioner.

In Europe, there is a strong awareness of the risks posed to the environment by increased usage, with air conditioners being at least 25% more efficient than those offered in the U.S. and Asia. However, studies predict that southern Europe will see a massive surge in power consumption as the use of air conditioners becomes increasingly necessary.

Researchers also predict that northern Europe will see the opposite effect, with electricity demand expected to drop. This polarized pattern across Europe has led to calls for greater integration of electricity supplies across the continent, especially given the shift towards renewable energy.

As we’ve said before, regions such as India where air conditioning is expected to double their energy demand within 15 years - and the U.S. where each home is emitting two tonnes of CO2 per year – more sustainable solutions are required to meet the challenges of climate change. How a tiny microsphere can help solve a big problem

Expancel thermoplastic microspheres contribute to high solar reflectance and are proven to reduce external roof temperatures by as much as 15°C*. A proven winner for elastomeric cool-roof coatings that will help reduce internal temperatures and reduce the need for high power consumption, especially from air conditioning. Test results show that commercial cool-roof coating formulated with Expancel and less titanium dioxide performs much better with spectral reflectance – compared to those without our microspheres. Our research findings have seen that hollow ultra-low density thermoplastic microspheres used as filler can improve a host of properties in cool-roof coatings.
